D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton is holding a presser Monday to try and convince Congress to finally pass a provision that would force the armed services to display the flags of the District and the territories whenever the 50 state flags are flown.
It's a follow up to a press conference Norton held back in November where the parent of a recent Naval Station Great Lakes graduate spoke about how upsetting it was that her son's flag -- the D.C. flag -- wasn't displayed along with the rest of the graduates' flags.
The conference is at 10 a.m. in the House Radio and TV Gallery, Studio A. Full press release from Norton's office below:
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and her fellow delegates will hold a press conference today, Monday, December 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. in the House Radio and TV Gallery, Studio A. Norton and her colleagues will call on the conference committee to include in the final fiscal year 2013 Defense Authorization bill the House-passed provision that would require the armed services to display the flags of the District and the territories anytime the flags of the 50 states are displayed. Norton has said that this is a matter of basic respect due to the citizens, veterans, service members, and flags of D.C. and the territories.
Norton will be joined by Congressman Gregorio Kilili Camacho Sablan (D-MP), who offered the amendment to the House version of the bill that requires the armed services to display the flags of the District and the territories anytime the flags of the 50 states are displayed; Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam), who is a member of the conference committee on the bill; and Congresswoman Donna Christiansen (D-Virgin Islands).
