A taxi driver was arrested after he struck a 14-year-old pedestrian and kept driving Thursday evening.
Authorities rushed the boy to an area hospital, after he was struck in the 4700 block of Wheeler Road in Oxon Hill, Md., about 6:30 p.m. He was in critical condition Friday.
"He had blood all over his head, and was in pretty poor condition just lying there," said a woman who came to the victim's aid.
He was crossing Wheeler Road but was not in the crosswalk, officials said. Speed appears to be a factor in the accident, police said.
A witness told authorities the suspect pulled into the nearby Southern Avenue Metro station, where Prince George's County Police took him into custody a short time later.
"It was the heads-up of a citizen that was able to observe the vehicle and was able to provide a great description and actually did a little bit of police work and was able to assist us in finding the vehicle and the driver," a police spokesperson said.
Charges against the taxi driver are pending. He is cooperating with the investigation, police said.
