Coastal Storm Bringing in Strong Winds

A powerful coastal storm will move northeast of the Delaware coast, bringing some very strong winds into our region later Friday night and into Saturday.

Expect gusts of more than 40 mph through mid-day Saturday.

Temperatures will plummet into the 20s by dawn. The morning will be cold with wind chill temperatures in the single digits, said StormTeam 4 Meteorologist Tom Kierein. Saturday will have a high of 40 degrees.

A winter weather advisory expired at 10 a.m. Friday, after some areas of the region experienced a slushy mix of snow and rain.

Snow accumulated mainly on grassy areas far north and west of the District, but it changed to rain later in the morning. Some regional schools opened late as a result, including Prince William and Loudoun.

And in advance of a what could be a record storm for Boston and the rest of the New England, more than 3,000 flights have already been canceled.

Many passengers planning to leave the D.C. area told News4's Megan McGrath that they've changed their plans and booked earlier flights.

"I had a 6:45 [p.m.] flight out of New York LaGuardia and it was canceled," one flyer told McGrath at Washington Reagan National Airport. "They switched me to a 12 o'clock flight. I'm like, 'That's ridiculous because you know it's not leaving,' so I just canceled everything. We hopped in the car and drove down here and booked a flight down here."

As for the trains, Amtrak said their Acela Express and Northeast Corridor lines were still running between Boston and D.C. Friday morning, but service between New York City and Boston will be suspended Friday afternoon.

Amtrak service south out of Boston will be suspended after Acela train 2167 departs at 1:15 p.m. and Northeast Regional train 137 departs at 1:40 p.m.

Amtrak's last northbound trains out of New York's Penn Station will be Northeast Regional Train 86 at 12:30 p.m. and Acela Express Train 2160 at 1:03 p.m.
