A University of Maryland student opened fire on his two housemates in an off-campus residence, killing one and wounding the other, before he turned the gun on himself, Prince George's County Police say.
Authorities are calling it a murder-suicide at a rented house in the 8700 block of 36th Avenue near University Boulevard.
Police said that shortly after 1 a.m. Tuesday, one resident set a fire in the basement of the home, and shot his two housemates when they ran outside.
The shooter then went to the rear of the house and killed himself, police said.
The victim who sustained non-life-threatening injuries ran to a neighbor's house for help. The other later died at a local hospital.
"All I heard was about six to seven shots going, 'pop pop pop,' and then about 15 minutes later, we saw the cops," neighbor Jithin George told News4's Megan McGrath.
Both victims and the shooter were male University of Maryland students, but it is unknown whether they were undergraduate or graduate students. Their identities have not yet been released.
The university sent an alert to students around 1:15 a.m., warning them that a shooting had been reported off-campus.
