A 4-year-old critically injured in a weekend house fire early Sunday morning has died, D.C. police said.

The fire began around 3 a.m. at 2616 33rd St. SE, authorities said.

A spokesman for D.C. Fire/EMS told News4 that a 4-year-old girl was rescued by firefighters from the upstairs bedroom and taken to Children's National Medical Center. Police identified her Tuesday as Samauri Jenkins. An autopsy will determine the cause and manner of her death.

Two adults and another child were also taken to local hospitals for smoke inhalation.

It is not known if all four people were related, as the house is split into apartments.

The home did not have any fire stops, which allowed the flames to spread more quickly, firefighters said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing, but fire officials confirmed to News4's Derrick Ward that the fire began in the basement.

D.C. police also confirmed that a man was arrested at the scene of the fire and charged with simple assault and threats. No further details about the man or the charges were immediately available.
