Prince William County police have charged a Woodbridge man with murder following the fatal shooting of a man walking his dog Thursday night.
Aric Alexander Smith, 25, of the 3700 block of Bogner Drive, was charged with with first degree murder, armed robbery, and using a firearm in commission of a felony.
Police say he shot and killed retired ATF agent Gregory Lee Holley, 55, as Holley was walking his dog along Wertz Drive in Woodbridge Thursday night.
An off-duty Prince William police officer happened to be in the area Thursday just before 10 p.m. when the first reports of shots being fired were made. Lieutenant Carlos Robles encountered Smith - who police said was on foot - on Cardinal Drive in Woodbridge, and detained him after a brief struggle.
Police say the victim and suspect did not know one another, and the gun used was stolen. They also said that the suspect was found with Holley's personal property.
