The intense winter storm that ground the Midwest to a halt Thursday and Friday is headed to the East Coast - and though the storm will largely miss the Washington area, we could see sleet and snow for Friday evening's commute home.

The storm paralyzed Missouri, Kansas, and neighboring states. Numerous accidents and two deaths were blamed on the icy, slushy roadways. State legislatures shut down in Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Most schools were closed in Kansas and Missouri, and many in neighboring states.

Kansas City, Mo. declared a state of emergency as snow fell at a rate of 2.5 inches an hour.

The storm is expected to affect nearly 30 million people.

In our area, Storm Team4 Meteorologist Tom Kierein said there may be light flurries during the morning Friday, strengthening somewhat but not leading to significant snow.

There may be light sleet and some snow in the evening and tonight. The precipitation will melt on most roads during the evening, but streets may ice overnight.

Counties in Western Maryland and in the central and southern Shenandoah Valley are under a winter weather advisory, and may see about an inch of accumulation overnight.
