Prince George’s County police are investigating a shooting involving a District of Columbia police officer Friday morning.
The incident began around 8 a.m. as the wife and 9-year-old daughter of the officer were getting ready to leave their home in the 5000 block of VIenna Drive in Clinton, Md.
After the daughter got into the car, the mother realized she had forgotten something and went back into the home.
The father then noticed someone trying to break into the car, News4's Tracee Wilkins reported.
The girl jumped out of the car, and the would-be car thief then drove off in their car, driving across the grass and crashing the vehicle. Police said he tried to steal another car, but crashed that one, too.
The officer fired at the vehicle, police said. They could not say if the officer had hit the man, but police said the man was injured, possibly from one of the car crashes.
He ultimately got away in a champagne-colored Toyota Camry with temporary tags.
Staff at local hospitals were told to be on the lookout for the man.
