Yesterday was Selection Sunday, so obviously your first several hours of work today will be consumed by printing out an excess amount of blank brackets and filling them in instead of doing actual work, which is totally acceptable if you ask me. Let your boss know that, too.
Anyway, locally, the Georgetown Hoyas drew a No. 2 seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament and will begin play Friday against the Eagles of Florida Gulf Coast University.
I know what you're thinking: What the heck is Florida Gulf Coast University? Where is Florida Gulf Coast University? (You know, more specifically than the gulf coast of Florida)? And so on.
That is why I am here to provide you with a primer. Follow me.
School: Florida Gulf Coast University
Nickname: Eagles
Location: Ft. Myers, Fla.
Enrollment: 11,291 (undergraduate)
Founded: 1991, but classes did not start until 1997. No, really, this school is actually younger than I am.
Here's an admission video. A coed studying in a bikini on the beach? Consider me sold.
How Did They Get Into The Tournament? In just their second year of eligibility, the Eagles qualified for the tournament by defeating Mercer in the Atlantic Sun tournament, receiving an automatic bid in the process.
How'd They Do This Year? Not bad, actually. FGCU finished with a 24-10 record and defeated the University of Miami, which was at one point the No. 2 team in the country this year, at home in November. The Eagles also faced the likes of Duke, St. John's and Iowa State before diving into conference play.
Who They Got?: Guard Sherwood Brown paces the Eagles, averaging more than 15 points and six rebounds per game. Fellow guard Bernard Thompson also provides a scoring punch, averaging 14 points per game. Their coach, Andy Enfield, was an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks.
Oh, and here's the student body doing the Harlem Shake:
Any Famous People? Well, Courtney Jolly is a former professional monster truck driver. That's kind of a famous person. (And as a commenter pointed out, White Sox pitcher Chris Sale)
The Hoyas and Eagles will tip off at 6:50 p.m. Friday.
As for a prediction, I don't know... Georgetown. Sounds pretty solid. Write that down.
