Connecticut Avenue is closed in both directions between Manor Road and Dunlap Street due to a broken water main at Chevy Chase Lake Drive.
Motorists are not able to get between D.C. and the Beltway using Connecticut Avenue.
Water gushed several stories high from the 54-inch main, according to WSSC.
The break caused a power line to fall, but no customers have lost power. It affected only the one power line and pole.
WSSC received no calls about water outages as of about 10 p.m.
Officials said the pipes are old but did not give a cause for the break.
There is no timeline for repairs, WSSC said.
The break could affect the morning commute.
