Days after repairing a massive water main break in Chevy Chase, the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission (WSSC) confirmed Tuesday morning that a new leak had developed in a neighboring main.
Crews shut down a portion of the 54-inch transmission main near the 3200 block of Coquelin Terrace in Chevy Chase Monday night after a resident reported seeing water on the ground that afternoon. The pipe is connected to the 60-inch main that failed on the night of March 18 near the intersection of Connecticut Avenue and Chevy Chase Lake Drive.
As in that case, WSSC said in a statement that the main had acoustic fiber optic (AFO) monitoring installed, but did not receive a signal of problems with the pipe. AFO monitoring is designed to record snapped wires within pipes, which could warn of potential breaks.
WSSC said that water is being drained from the pipe and an emergency contractor would begin repairs as soon as possible. The utility said that no customers are without water and no water use restrictions are in effect.
