Abortion-rights supporters say they've collected more than 3,000 public comments opposing Virginia's new abortion clinic regulations.

They plan to deliver the comments to the State Board of Health on Thursday. The board is scheduled to take a final vote on the regulations April 12.

The General Assembly mandated the regulations, which would require all Virginia abortion clinics to meet the same strict building standards as newly constructed hospitals. Those standards cover things like doorway widths and room sizes.

Opponents say the regulations would require expensive renovations that would put most of the state's 20 existing abortion clinics out of business.

The Board of Health already has given preliminary approval to the regulations, which took effect on an emergency basis on Jan. 1, 2012.
