Yesterday, I highlighted the Dallas Cowboys' problems with winning must-win games, so today, it only seemed logical to look at the quarterback who has let them down: Tony Romo.
Romo has been the Cowboys' starting quarterback for the last seven years. Sure, he has three Pro Bowls to his name and dated Jessica Simpson when she was still an A-lister, but he's won just one playoff game. To put that into perspective, Roger Staubach won three playoff games, a Super Bowl and a Super Bowl MVP award in his first go-around as the starter in Dallas, while Troy Aikman led Cowboys to consecutive championships in his fourth and fifth years at the helm. Not that Romo compares to those two, but you know Cowboys fans surely hold him to those standards.
Romo is 1-5 all-time in win-or-go-home games in Week 17 and the postseason (where all games are win-and-go-home). I pointed out two Week 17 instances yesterday (and because I've decided to troll Dallas all week), so let's look at the rest!
Jan. 17, 2010: Cowboys at Vikings -- NFC Divisional Round
The Vikings sacked Romo six times, forced him to fumble three times (twice they recovered) and throw one interception in a 34-3 victory
Jan. 9, 2010: Eagles at Cowboys -- NFC Wild Card Round
This remains Romo's only career playoff victory. The 34-14 win snapped a six-game playoff losing streak and gave the Cowboys their first postseason victory since 1996. Romo completed 23 of his 35 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns..
Jan. 13, 2008: Giants at Cowboys -- NFC Divisional Round
Romo wasn't entirely to blame for this one (a 21-17 loss), but this game is better known for Terrell Owens' teary-eyed postgame press conference:
Jan. 6, 2007: Cowboys at Seahawks -- NFC Wild Card Round
Ah, yes. This is a classic. The AP story from that day said it better than I could:
"All Tony Romo had to do was put the ball down and let Martin Gramatica make an easy kick -- just 19 yards, even closer than an extra point."
About that...
Let's watch that again from a different angle.
Yeah, that's nice.
