Prince George's County senators approved a measure that would allow County Executive Rushern Baker to select the county's new schools superintendent and choose the chairman and vice chairman of an expanded Board of Education.

The school board would remain in charge of the budget.

The measure passed in a 7-1 vote Wednesday. It now awaits approval from a Senate committee.

Baker in recent weeks proposed an extensive overhaul of the school system, which would allow him to select the new superintendent and control the school system's $1.7 billion budget.

The proposal was met with firm resistance from the school board.

Baker said that he is pleased with the current compromise and believes that it will put the system on the right path.
