A University of Maryland student who killed a roommate before shooting himself in February had a blood-alcohol level that was nearly twice the legal limit.
Dayvon Green, 23, opened fire on his two housemates in an off-campus residence in College Park, killing one and wounding the other before turning the gun on himself, police said.
An autopsy report obtained by the Baltimore Sun showed Green had been drinking heavily before the shooting. Green's family has also said that the graduate student was battling mental illness.
The report also shows that roommate Stephen Rane, who died at later at a local hospital, was shot four times from behind, suggesting he was running from Green.
Green also shot a second roomate, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Green, a graduate student in engineering, had completed an undergraduate degree at Morgan State University, police said.
On Feb. 12, Green set several small fires in the basement and backyard of his rented house in the 8700 block of 36th Avenue near University Boulevard, police said. As his roommates went to get water to extinguish the blazes, they noticed Green reaching into his waistband for a gun.
Police who responded to 911 calls for help found a 9mm handgun next to Green’s body. They also discovered a bag of weapons including a baseball bat, a machete, a fully-loaded semi-automatic .22-caliber rifle and ammunition, police said.
Parker said the gun used in the slaying was purchased legally in the Baltimore County area in 2012. Green legally purchased the other gun Jan. 18 from a gun store in Silver Spring, police said.
