A gun has been recovered at the scene where a man died in a police-involved shooting early Tuesday, D.C. police have confirmed.

The shooting happened shortly after 3 a.m. at the intersection of Sheridan and Stanton roads SE, near Suitland Parkway.

An official told News4's Megan McGrath that a patrol officer saw a man acting erratically in the middle of Sheridan Road. The officer told the man to get on the sidewalk, but the man pulled out a gun. That's when the officer opened fire.

The man was pronounced dead on the scene.

"We were sitting in the apartment looking at TV like we normally do," a resident of a nearby building told McGrath. "We heard four or five shots, and one of the neighbors came to the apartment building and knocked on the door and told us, 'We heard a lot of shots.'"
