The North American Aerospace Defense Command and the Continental United States NORAD Region will conduct exercise Falcon Virgo 13-07a here in the District overnight.
The flyover is scheduled to take place from midnight to 2 a.m. Wednesday. In the event that the weather is unsatisfactory, the flights will be rescheduled for the following night.
The carefully planned exercises are part of a series of training flights designed to hone NORAD's intercept and identification operations and also certify newly assigned command and control personnel.
NORAD has conducted these types of exercise flights throughout the U.S. and Canada since the start of Operation Noble Eagle after the terrorist attacks on September 11.
Since that time, CONR fighters have responded to over 5,000 possible air threats in the U.S. and have flown more than 62,500 sorties with the support of Airborne Warning and Control System and air-to-air refueling.
This flyover will feature a Civil Air Patrol aircraft, Air Force F-16s and a U.S. Coast Guard MH-65 Dolphin helicopter.
CONR provides airspace surveillance and control and ensures air safety and security against potential air threats.
