A wrong-way driver caused a four-car crash on Interstate 495 Thursday afternoon, Virginia State Police said.
Within seconds of state police learning of a silver Chevrolet Impala traveling northbound in the southbound express lanes about 1:10 p.m., the Impala exited to the regular southbound lanes, state police said. At mile marker 44, it struck a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck and then collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla, which caused the cars to hit a Honda.
The drivers of the three cars suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to Fairfax Inova Hospital.
Charges against the 25-year-old Missouri man driving the Impala are pending. Alcohol appears to be a factor, state police said.
Southbound I-495 reopened by 2:50 p.m.
