Ahead of Monday's New Year's Eve celebrations, authorities in Prince George's County are warning residents off using fireworks to celebrate the changing of the calendar to 2013.
The county's Fire/EMS Department released a statement Saturday recommending that revelers "leave the pyrotechnics to the experts and leave fireworks out of your celebration planning."
It is illegal to manufacture, sell, possess, or discharge fireworks in Prince George's County as well as Montgomery County in Maryland and the City of Baltimore. Exceptions are granted to licensed pyrotechnic professionals conducting authorized displays. Violation of the law can bring a fine of up to $1,000 and/or six months in jail.
