A purse-snatcher fled the scene of a robbery Monday with his two-year-old son standing up, unrestrained, in the back seat of his car, the Charles County Sheriff's Department said.

Larry Jamal Fortune, 22, of Fairfax, Va. was charged with robbery, assault, theft, endangering a child, and multiple traffic violations.

An 80-year-old woman was leaving a grocery store shortly after 9:30 a.m. in the 3200 block of Crain Highway in Waldorf Monday when Fortune approved her and took her purse, police said. Fortune fled in a white Chrysler 300.

A Charles County officer found the car on Crain Highway. Fortune would not pull over, police said, and soon the officer noticed a small boy standing up in the backseat of the car. The police stopped pursuing Fortune, concerned about the boy.

But they had identified Fortune, and soon they found the car in Washington. His son was found safe in the custody of a relative.
