Highly touted prospect Anthony Rendon made his major-league debut in the Nationals' 2-0 loss to the Mets on Sunday, going 0-for-4 with two strikeouts and an error.
The 22-year-old's parents, Rene and Bridget, were supposed to be in Queens to catch the proudest moment of their son's life (I assume, at least).
“It was pretty emotional, obviously, especially my mom,” Rendon told reporters about being called up for the first time. “They’re excited. Right when I told my mom she was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I’m about to cry.’ And then she got teary-eyed and I teared up a little bit. It was good. It was a good moment.”
Rendon's parents were set to fly out of Houston, but they never made it:
Bridget and Rene bought plane tickets to see their son in New York. When they arrived at the airport this morning, they were saddened to learn a miscommunication within the airline had lost their seats, despite the confirmation numbers in hand. “Bad story,” Rendon said. Instead, his parents will come see him play Monday, his first game in Washington.
Let's hope that they make it to Washington in time. First pitch is 7:05 p.m.
