Family, friends and colleagues said a final farewell Saturday to a D.C. police officer who was shot and killed at his home in Prince George's County on Monday.
The funeral service for Detective Joseph Newell began at noon Saturday at Jericho City of Praise Church in Landover.
D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and other city leaders attended alongside many of Newell's fellow police officers. Newell was a 24-year veteran of the police force.
Police said the officer's stepson, 27-year-old Antwan James, shot Newell more than a dozen times.
They said the two were arguing over yard work at their home in Upper Marlboro.
James, who was being sought by police for violating the terms of his probation following an assault arrest earlier this year, turned himself into police Tuesday evening.
James is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Newell and is currently being held without bond.
