A woman was struck by a car and killed in Southeast D.C. Sunday, reports News4's Darcy Spencer, and the car's driver is in custody.
The woman was walking along South Capitol Street near 1st Street when she was struck by a white Toyota at about 3:20 p.m. The Toyota came to rest on a nearby sidewalk; the driver stayed on the scene.
Police haven't released the woman's identity, Spencer said.
Police said the Toyota apparently jumped the curb and traveled on the sidewalk, striking the woman. The car also struck a tree, police told Spencer.
The driver is in custody, charged with alcohol-related offenses, police said.
The walk was part of the woman's regular Sunday routine, her son told Spencer. She would go to church each Sunday, and then collect her shopping bags and walk to the store.
"A lot of people just saw her coming from church," the son said. "You just leave from church, go in the house and get your shopping bags and you take a walk to go get groceries and you lose your life..."
"This lady is by far one of the biggest angels in the world," a woman told Spencer on the scene. "She's an angel, you can't put it any other way ... and she's gone now."
D.C. police are investigating; it is not yet clear if charges will be filed.
