A sick raccoon seen in the 3100 block of Macomb Street NW was later determined to have rabies, the D.C. Department of Health said Friday morning.
The raccoon, a one-year-old lactating female, was covered in dog ticks and left her babies behind. They could possibly be rabid as well, the health department said.
Flyers throughout the area are advising Cleveland Park residents to secure trash cans, repair holes in attics and porches, and not allow unleashed pets to run in wooded areas.
Dogs and cats exposed to rabies and Lyme disease can transmit those diseases to humans. The city does not remove wildlife animals unless they are sick or injured.
