Starting in January, Maryland will no longer honor benefits to state employees in domestic partnerships because the state now recognizes same-sex marriage.

The Washington Examiner reports that state employees will need to get married to keep their spouses and children covered by their insurance.

The change affects fewer than 300 current state employees or retirees.

Couples in domestic partnerships will receive health benefits through the end of the year.

Maryland will stop accepting domestic partnership applications next month.
