An accident -- not a human attack -- led to the deaths of two horses in the Nokesville area Friday morning, according to Prince William County police.
Horse owners have been on edge since one horse was discovered dead and another badly injured early Friday morning in a field at a large boarding and showing facility on Vint Hill Road. The injured horse had to be euthanized.
Vets at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Center performed a necropsy on each animal and concluded their injuries came from some sort of accident. One of the horses had a broken neck. The other had a badly injured shoulder and a cut on its head.
Prince William County police 1st Sgt. Kim Chinn, who heads the department's mounted patrol, said the animals could have been spooked and run into something.
Police investigators will return to the horse farm to work with the owner to try to determine what might have caused the deadly injuries.
