Throughout his life, Chuck Brown symbolized the energy, culture and music of the District.
The legacy of the "Godfather of Go-Go" is being memorialized by local artists and businesses as the first anniversary of his death approaches.
Thursday, the Howard Theater will pay tribute to Chuck Brown with “the crankin’est band on the planet,” the Chuck Brown Band All Star Band, there to rock the house in honor of the man who started it all. Beginning at 10 p.m. you can watch Brown’s daughter KK, The Horny Horns, Whiteboy from Rare Essence, Jas Funk, Frank Marcus Young and other special guests perform the hits that made Chuck a household name. Tickets for this all-ages event is $25 in advance and $30 the day of the show.
Paintings and area parks have been dedicated in Brown’s memory throughout the past year.
In January, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray signed legislation to being building the Chuck Brown Music Pavilion. The pavilion is set to be located at Langdon Park, near the intersection of 20th and Franklin streets NE.
Ben’s Chili Bowl unveiled unveilved a mural on its famed wall of the homegrown artist back in September. Brown was also remembered at the 2012 BET Awards.
Brown died at the age of 75 from complications from pneumonia May 17, 2012.
