Police say a 52-year-old Beltsville woman was critically injured when she was struck by a van in Wheaton Thursday morning.

According to officials, Mary Josephine Fish was standing at a median on the intersection of Veirs Mill Road and Georgia Avenue at approximately 9 a.m. Fish was holding a hand-made sign, about 200 yards from a WMATA metro station.

A Honda Accord and a Nissan van were traveling southbound on Veirs Mill Road before the intersection where Fish was standing.

The driver of the Honda made an unsafe lane change from the middle lane to the left lane, hitting the Nissan. The Nissan, an electrician's van, then propped onto the curb, striking Fish.

"Charges are pending at this point," Capt. Jim Daly with Montgomery County Police said. "Detectives from the collision reconstruction unit [were] on the scene."

The two cars involved in the accident had minor damage.
