A family dog led a retired Prince George's County fire lieutenant to a woman trapped inside a burning home in Bowie Friday morning.
Retired Fire Lt. Billy Mills was in the area when he saw smoke and traced it to a two-story home in the 16300 block of Pond Meadow Lane in Bowie. As Prince George's County Fire and EMS workers readied their gear, Mills performed a 360-degree check of the home and found a black Labrador running around the backyard.
The dog then led Mills inside the home, to a woman surrounded by thick smoke and intense heat, authorities said. He and former volunteer fire chief Hugh Owens pulled the victim to safety.
The dog's owner was transported to a local hospital suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Her injuries are probably not life-threatening, authorities said.
The home was rendered uninhabitable. Authorities said there was a hoarding-type situation in the home.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
