A medical examiner is working to confirm the identity of a man killed in a Herndon house fire Wednesday night.
Fairfax County fire crews were called to 12810 Willow Glen Court around 11 p.m. Wednesday. The female caller told the dispatcher her home's garage was on fire, and she believed her husband was still inside.
The garage was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived, and crews heard a number of explosions due to the combustibles stored within the garage. The fire also spread into the roof and attic area.
It took firefighters about 10 minutes to extinguish the blaze. After it was out, they found the body of a person in the garage. While they believe the victim is the woman's husband, his identity must be confirmed by the medical examiner.
Fire officials say the family also had 37 cats; 25 have been accounted for at this time.
Damage is estimated at $175,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
