Supporters of a man formerly on Virginia's death row are calling for his release following a delay.

Justin Wolfe was supposed to be released from prison on Thursday but an appeals court stopped his release.

"It was really hard," Terri Steinberg, Wolfe's wife, told News4.

"[It was] very devastating to see my children have to go through this again. We got so close to getting him home. We were on the way to pick him up when we got the phone call that the stay had been issued," she said.

On Saturday night, Wolfe's family and some supporters held a rally outside a Fairfax Station fundraiser for Virginia Attorney General and Republican gubernatorial candidate Ken Cuccinelli.

In July, a judge threw out Wolfe's conviction in a murder-for-hire plot after allegations surfaced that the prosecution coerced a key witness.

The appeals court will hear Wolfe's case in Richmond later this month.
