The Susan G. Komen three-day “Race for the Cure” will not return to Washington, D.C., and six other cities in 2014 due to “economic uncertainty.”

The organization aimed at raising awareness of breast cancer announced Monday on Facebook that it will cancel races in D.C., Boston, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Chicago, Arizona and Cleveland.

“The difficult decision to exit these markets was not made lightly, as we know this bold and empowering event has touched the lives of thousands of participants like you,” the post read.

The race will continue in Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth, Michigan, Philadelphia, San Diego, Seattle and the Twin Cities.

Events scheduled later this year will not be affected, according to the organization.

The organizations' post cited, "participation levels over the last four years have made it difficult to sustain an event of this magnitude in 14 cities."
