D.C. Middle School students spent a day of service creating a special gift for victims of the Oklahoma tornadoes.

One sixth grade class at Deal Middle School in Northwest made cards and "friendship" bracelets for students in the small town of Moore,Okla. where two elementary schools were destroyed by the May 20 storm.

Friday's event was part of the annual Deal Gives Back Day. After seeing news reports about the devastation, the class decided to reach out.

“The kids’ bracelets, the colors are meant to symbolize different things and they’re attaching notes to the bracelets so they have a matching bracelet with the kids there," Deal Middle School teacher Michele Glick said. "This is all the kids' ideas, so it’s really great."

The letters and bracelets will be shipped to Oklahoma next week. The students also performed community service at more than 30 different locations around the city.
