A 23-year-old man pleaded guilty Wednesday in connection with the July 2011 shooting death of 19-year-old Jeffrey Covington.
According to officials, Covington was playing a craps game with his father, Jeffrey Blount in the 600 block of 46th Place Southeast just after 1 a.m. June 11. William Faison approached them and pulled out a handgun, pushing Covington out of the way.
Faison then pointed the gun at the back of Blount's head in an attempt to rob him, but he ran from the scene. Covington tried to come to the aid of his dad by pointing an inoperable weapon at Faison.
Faison turned back around and fatally shot Covington.
Evidence shows Faison fled but later returned, in an attempt to take his son's money from his pockets. After he realized his son was dead, he threw away the inoperable weapon he had tried to use in a near-by trash can.
Faison was arrested the day of the shooting and pleaded guilty to second degree murder Monday.
Blount, 43, also pleaded guilty to tampering with physical evidence at the scene of the crime.
Blount will be sentenced Aug. 15 and Faison will be sentenced Aug. 16.
