The City of Alexandria wrapped up 2012 with no homicides -- for the first time in at least 42 years, police announced Monday.
"The Alexandria Police Department’s success in continuing to reduce crime and improve the quality of life in our neighborhoods is a direct result of the quality, hard work and dedication of our sworn, civilian and volunteer staff," said a post on the department's website.
Police say that although 2012's crime statistics have not been finalized, data indicate that crime continues to be at a historic low in Alexandria.
Alexandria had one murder in 2011 and three in 2010. In the 1970s, the city averaged 10.2 murders per year.
