The mistress of an Annapolis man who tried to enlist a hit man to kill his wife has been sentenced to 18 months in jail for her part in the plot.

Cynthia Mills entered an Alford plea to conspiracy to commit murder, maintaining her innocence while acknowledging prosecutors have enough evidence to convict her, The Capital of Annapolis reports.

Mills was implicated in the plot when her lover, Wendell Mansel, was arrested in August in Leesburg, Va. after attempting to hire an undercover police officer posing as a hitman to kill his wife. Investigators later determined Mills and Mansel were having an affair.

Police said Mills provided some of the money and helped plan the scheme. Mansel has pleaded guilty and is set to be sentenced Sept. 4.
