For a special report on transportation in D.C. and its suburbs, News4 Transportation Reporter Adam Tuss took a look at the top traffic trouble spots in the area.
Watch highlights of our special report, "Changing Lanes," here. Meanwhile, here are his picks:
1. I-95 South in Virginia
From the Mixing Bowl, all the way down to Stafford County, construction work on the 95 Express Lane project stretches well over 20 miles and will last well beyond the summer months.
2. Rockville Pike in Bethesda
As intersections and roads are widened and improved to handle the extra growth at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, traffic will continue to slow to a crawl.
3. New York Avenue, NE D.C.
Road work and bridge work will continue to take a toll along one of the busiest main roads into and out of the District.
4. Inner Loop at the American Legion Bridge
In recent months, traffic along this stretch seems to have grown worse. Could it be a coincidence that this is the area where the brand-new Express Lanes end and create a merge with the general purpose lanes?
5. I-66 West at the Beltway
Never an easy location, summer travelers mix with commuters almost every afternoon during rush hour, creating a slow merge.
6. Baltimore-Washington Parkway
Call it growth in the region, or call it a road that needs to have more capacity, the entire BW Parkway is notoriously slow before, during or after most rush hour cycles.
7. I-95 North in Whitemarsh, Md.
Any summertime weekend warrior who heads up to Delaware, Philadelphia or New Jersey can tell you all about the rough north of Baltimore. An ongoing Express Lane project there also isn't helping cars get by. Proceed with caution.
8. Connecticut Avenue in Chevy Chase, Md.
Heading into town in the morning -- but especially during the evening commute home -- Connecticut Avenue has turned into a very slow roll getting to, from or beyond the Beltway.
9. Outer Loop at Route 50 east
A series of merges, as through-town traffic mixes with beach traffic, means drivers must beware of delays on the Beltway that can stretch for miles.
10. Outer Loop exit for northbound Georgia Avenue
A newcomer on some people's lists. But those in the know say this exit ramp causes backups onto the Beltway at some of the worst possible moments.
