Culpeper's police chief and a former police chief say they're not liable for the fatal shooting of a woman by a former officer.

Police Chief Chris Jenkins and former Chief Dan Boring are defendants in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the brother of 54-year-old Patricia Ann Cook of Culpeper. Cook was shot by former officer Daniel Harmon-Wright on Feb. 9, 2012.

Harmon-Wright is serving a three-year prison sentence after being convicted in January on manslaughter and unlawful shooting charges. He's also a defendant in the lawsuit.

The lawsuit claims Boring and Jenkins were negligent in hiring, supervising, training and retaining Harmon-Wright.

The Culpeper Star-Exponent reports that Jenkins and Boring denied the allegations in a recent court filing. They also say they are entitled to immunity under Virginia law.
