A medium-sized black bear was spotted Monday in a Tysons Corner neighborhood, police say.
Residents reported seeing the bear in a yard in the area of Jarrett Valley Drive and Edgepark Road around 1:30 p.m. One caller said a birdfeeder was torn down by the bear.
Animal control officers looked for the animal but were unable to find it.
This is the first bear sighting for the Vienna area for the 2013 season.
It's not unusual to see bears this time of year, animal control officers say, especially when the bears are in search of food.
Just last week, a black bear was spotted three days in a row in Gaithersburg.
If you are faced with a bear, do not attempt to feed it or approach it. Scare it away by making some sort of loud noise.
