The suspect in a series of stabbings in D.C. was ordered held without bond during a court hearing Tuesday.

Garey Jones III, 20, of Northwest D.C., is charged with assault with a dangerous weapon for an attack that occurred in the Petworth neighborhood last week.

Police believe he may also be responsible for at least three similar similar stabbings, News4's Darcy Spencer reported.

In court Tuesday, Jones' defense attorney called this claim unfounded, saying the four victims provided four different descriptions.

A D.C. Superior Court judge didn't agree, saying that there were enough other similarities in the cases.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said over the weekend that authorities believed one person was responsible for all for incidents.

"Three of the four instances... around the Allison, Decatur area are within 10 to 12 blocks from each other," Lanier said. "The [other] one is a little farther away, but still similar enough in time and method of attack that give us some concern that it may be related."

The four attacks happened May 5, June 10 and June 14, all in Northwest.

According to a court document, Jones had been prescribed a medication used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said that could offer an explanation, but there was still no clear motive. The victims were chosen at random, she said.

Jones was taken into custody late Thursday, after police saw him acting strangely and realized he matched a description given by one of the stabbing victims. They obtained a search warrant and discovered bloody clothing and a pocketknife, after which they got an arrest warrant.
