The Washington Capitals re-signed restricted free agent defenseman Karl Alzner to a four-year, $11.2 million contract extension Wednesday.
“We are very pleased to sign Karl Alzner to a contract extension,” general manager George McPhee said in a statement. “Karl is just entering his prime and has been a model of consistency for our organization since he entered the league. He plays tough and valuable minutes against some of the NHL’s top players every game.”
The 24-year-old played in all 48 games for Washington last season, further establishing himself as the team's top shutdown defenseman. He has appeared in every game since the start of the 2010-11 season.
With Alzner's re-signing, the Capitals now have around $5.6 million in available cap space.
