We're in for some hazy, hot and humid weather this week. The D.C. area will experience its first extended heatwave of the year, with temperatures near 95 degrees or higher each afternoon until Saturday.

The last time the region saw weather this hot was Sept. 1, 2012.

But this week's heatwave won't break any records, Storm Team4 meteorologist Tom Kierein said. Record highs for each day this week are 100 degrees or higher. One of those records was set on July 18, 2012, when the area hit 101 degrees.

But thanks to the heat index -- the combination of temperature and humidity -- each day will feel like it's near 100 degrees.

No heat advisories were issued Monday, but they could be in effect Tuesday and Wednesday when afternoon highs will reach the upper 90s. The heat index on those days will exceed 105 degrees, Kierein added.

With all this hot weather, you'll definitely need to stay cool. Here are some tips on how you can prevent heat exhaustion:

  • If you have to be outside for a lengthy periods of time, don't over exert yourself.
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightweight, lightly colored clothing.

The heat is responsible for the most weather-related deaths, beating out tornadoes, hurricanes and lightning.
