The Chesapeake Bay Bridge will remain open as police investigate an accident that forced a car off the bridge and into the water Friday evening.
Maryland Transportation Authority Police said a barge and a crane will be used to pull the car out of the water. The driver of the car, a 22-year-old woman, escaped serious injury when her vehicle was hit by a tractor-trailer and knocked into the Chesapeake Bay.
The eastbound lanes on the bridge were closed Friday night as police investigated the accident. The car ended up in about 8 feet of water.
The woman, who MTA police said they would not identify, swam to a nearby jetty and was rescued. She is being treated at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore and is in stable condition.
Engineers examined the bridge structure for potential damage.
