Tests have shown elevated levels of a toxic substance in Lake Needwood located in Rock Creek Regional Park in Silver Spring, Md.

According to Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, the substance is produced by blue-green algae in the 75-acre lake. If ingested, the algae can cause serious harm to humans and pets.

Visitors to the lake are asked to keep their dogs on leashes, keep out of the water, wash their hands if they come in contact with the water and only eat properly cooked fish that are caught in the lake.

“We have posted signs around Lake Needwood and urge visitors to please pay attention to these precautions to avoid any harm from microcystin,” Principal Natural Resource Specialist for Montgomery Parks Jai Cole said. “Portions of the lake may be contaminated for the rest of the season. We will continue to monitor and update signs when the warning is lifted.”

Boating and fishing are still permitted at the lake.
