Adam Kokesh, a Virginia man who posted a video of himself loading a shotgun in Downtown D.C. earlier this month, is now facing charges related to the incident.
Kokesh, 31, posted a video of himself to YouTube loading a shotgun with four shells of ammunition while standing at Freedom Plaza, located between the White House and the Capitol July 4. Kokesh then held the gun across his chest and "racked the action of the shotgun, chambering a round," the arrest warrant states.
Within a few days of the incident, a U.S. Park Police officer reviewed the video and concluded the shotgun's authenticity.
The shotgun and four shells depicted in the video were seized from Kokesh's Herndon, Va. home July 9. Also seized that day were five rifles, two pistols, one handgun, one shotgun, various sizes of ammunition, marijuana, mushrooms and other suspected narcotics.
He was arrested on charges of drug possession.
The shotgun used in the video was tested and found to be "fully operable," according to documents.
In an interview with News4's Mark Segraves July 8, Kokesh stated, "D.C. laws provide one way of exposing the hypocrisy of government, showing how doing something in Virginia is totally legal, then crossing an imaginary line drawn on the map by a politician, all the sudden can get you locked away for five years."
The charge Kokesh is facing carries a maximum sentence of five years behind bars and a fine up to $5,000.
Kokesh is an Iraq war veteran and gun rights activist.
He faces a detention hearing Monday morning.
