Jack Jr., Georgetown University's mascot-in-training, won't be the next Hoya star because he won't be returning to campus come the fall.

University officials and trainers determined that "returning to a home environment is what is best for J.J."

The bulldog's sudden dismissal surprised many. Christopher Steck, a Georgetown professor and Jack Jr.'s caretaker told the Washington Express that he "genuinely believe[s] that J.J. would thrive as the next university mascot."

Head of the student group known as the Jack Crew Never Schadler said she didn't see the university decision coming.

Jack Jr. trained for 15 months to be the next university mascot after Jack Sr. tore his ACL and retired last spring.

The life of a university mascot is "exciting and hectic" according the university's press release. "J.J.'s caretaker and walkers have worked to orient him to campus and train him for mascot duties. The lifestyle involves many people, thousands of screaming fans, and regular appearances at events both on and off-campus."

Despite Jack Jr. returning to life as a civilian dog, we're sure the adorable pup has free treats in his future.

The school has not named the next mascot.
