The Washington Animal Rescue League announced it would be taking in more than one dozen dogs and cats displaced by superstorm Sandy in October.
The animals have been living in temporary shelters in New York City, and will arrive in Washington Monday afternoon.
According to WARL's Matt Williams, the shelter is expecting eight dogs and five cats.
While "some will turn around pretty quickly," Williams said, they will all go through medical and behavioral evaluation before being made available for adoption.
WARL said the animals were all either abandoned by their owners, surrendered, or were strays.
