After weeks of blistering cold, Tuesday brought sunshine and a high of 69 degrees in Washington, but wintry conditions and the possibility of severe storms are expected later in the week.

The mild weather will remain through Tuesday evening, with temperatures dropping only to 60 degrees by 10 p.m. Wednesday will be even warmer, with an expected high of 74 degrees, said Storm Team 4 meteorologist Veronica Johnson.

Although temperatures will be warmer, the winds will be stronger and will pull humidity out of the Gulf of Mexico, prompting strong wind gusts up to 60 mph and heavy rain between 8 p.m. and 11 p.m. Wednesday. More than an inch of rain is possible.

Winter will return by the end of the week, with high temperatures plummeting to the mid-40s Thurdsay and the upper 30s Friday  37 degrees by Friday morning. The weekend is expected to be chilly but mostly dry with the possibility of a few flurries Friday and Super Bowl Sunday.
