A vigil was held in Northeast D.C. Saturday to mark the one-year anniversary of the murder of a transgender woman.

JaParker Deoni Jones, was stabbed to death while waiting for a bus at the corner of East Capitol Street and Sycamore Road on the evening of February 2 of last year. A week later, D.C. Police arrested Gary Niles Montgomery, of Northeast, and charged him with second-degree murder.

Montgomery is awaiting his trial, which is scheduled to begin in June. D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray was among those who attended the vigil, which was held to express concern that Montgomery has not been charged with a hate crime.
