As people all over the D.C. area get ready to head out to Super Bowl parties, local police are warning them to be safe.
In Maryland, police in Montgomery and Anne Arundel counties will be conducting so-called "saturation patrols," in which a large number of officers will be watching the roads Sunday night and early Monday morning.
In Virginia, Fairfax County Police will also conduct extra DWI patrols.
According to MADD, Super Bowl Sunday is one of the deadliest nights of the year for drunk-driving fatalities.
Police are advising people to figure out who the designated driver is before going out, and to put the phone number for a taxi company in their cell phone. Authorities are also recommending that partygoers avoid drinking too much alcohol too fast by eating plenty of food in between beverages.
Another suggestion is for hosts to imitate NFL stadium policies and stop serving alcoholic drinks after the end of the third quarter.
